What is The Spring Hill School’s STEAM Night Series?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be an Egyptologist and explore the ancient world? What about a veterinarian who rescues humpback whales in the Philippines? Have you ever wondered about how radar works as you jetted off on a commercial airplane? If you have pondered these diverse and fascinating questions...or just had your curiosity piqued as you read them over...The Spring Hill School has some exciting news! In fall of 2021, we launched a brand-new STEAM speaker series where all of these questions (and many more!) will be answered by experts in STEAM fields.

The Spring Hill School is dedicated to providing fun, educational experiences where our community can meaningfully engage in the curriculum we teach. During the 2021-2022 school year, we invite you to embark on a STEAM journey with us as we are joined by STEAM experts from across the world to learn about the amazing work they do in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. This family-friendly speaker series will be a forum where students, their families, and the community at large can learn about the value of STEAM in our world.

Each speaker will visit our school via Zoom or in-person for an hour long interactive lecture experience with time for questions, comments, and opportunities to share. We will also offer projects inspired by the speakers that families can do before or after the STEAM lectures.

We invite our Spring Hill community to join us as we STEAM across the 2021-2022 school year! Lectures will be offered on Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 PM.

Brodie Jenkins of The Cathedrals

Brodie Jenkins grew up in sleepy California wine country in an old farmhouse that echoed with folk, jazz and soul. Before her fifteenth birthday she was signed and touring with her mother and sister in an Americana-steeped family band. The trio had two singles in the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts: "Blame It on Mama" at No. 34 and "Getaway Car" at No. 38. After attending Stanford University and earning a Bachelors in English and Creative Writing, Brodie went on to become a founding musician for the group The Cathedrals and has been performing with this group ever since. In addition to being a successful singer and musician, Brodie is a gifted interior designer. Check out this recent article in VOGUE that showcases her beautiful home! Marty O'Reilly of Marty O'Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra

Marty O'Reilly is the vocalist and guitarist in the Marty O'Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra band. He has always loved music. He recalls spending hours as he grew up strumming his guitar in his room and learning to play the blues. In his current band, he's able to play music that embraces many genres, from music with early American roots to contemporary psychedelic rock. His band's latest release, "Signal Fires," is their third full-length album - a collection of songs about love, the value of memories and time - all written amidst a world which seems to be literally burning at every turn. His band also includes: Ben Berry on upright bass, Matt Goff on drums and percussion, and Chris Lynch on violin and keys. Click here to check out Marty's music on Spotify!

David Luning of The David Luning Band

At Berklee College of Music, David was introduced to the music of John Prine, Ryan Adams, Old Crow Medicine Show, Todd Snider, and The Band. David fell in love with Americana music and embraced music as his fulltime career. In 2013, David auditioned for American Idol to receive worldwide exposure for his original music, and to be an advocate for Americana music. Out of 75,000 people who auditioned, he made it to the top 100, performing his original song "In Hell I Am”, which appeared on American Idol’s January 16th, 2014 episode. His songs have also been featured on popular TV shows like Grimm! In addition to writing, recording and performing his original songs, David collaborates with Brodie Jenkins in the folk duo Ghost and Gale. Here is his website!
